Restart a Heart Day, 16th October each year, is a timely reminder. Every year, around 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital in the UK. Fewer than one in ten survive. Not because the treatment doesn’t exist but because, in most cases, nobody nearby knew what to do. That’s not a medical problem. It’s a training problem. And it’s one we can fix.

Every 8th July, the world marks International Paramedics Day - and the date wasn’t chosen at random. Much as we celebrate International Nurses Day on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, 8th July is the birthday of Dominique Jean Larrey, a French military surgeon.
